About the museum
The Volksinstrumentenmuseum presents a remarkable collection of folk music instruments in community centre De Cam in Gooik. Its core is the collection of Herman Dewit and Rosita Tahon, the founders of ’t Kliekske and the Volksmuziekgilde. Thanks to the municipality, the collection found a home in a contemporary museum above the folk café of De Cam. The museum is organised by Muziekmozaïek vzw, the umbrella organisation for folk and jazz in Flanders.
On show are valuable old instruments such as the hommel, the bagpipe, the hurdy-gurdy, the klompviool, the rommelpot, the hakkebord, the rinkelbom, the diatonic accordion and the fijfer. Old prints, scores, broadsheets and other archive material from the same collection complement the instruments.
You can visit the museum without a guide, but the instruments really come to life during an interactive guided tour. A musician then gives an extensive demonstration, and you may sometimes try something yourself. The guided tour can be combined with a visit to the geuzestekerij and the folk café in the same inner courtyard.
