About the museum

The DOX Centre for Contemporary Art opened to the public in October 2008 in a former factory in Prague’s Holešovice district. It arose from the private initiative of Leoš Válka and his business partner Robert Aafjes, and to this day it is one of the largest independent institutions focused on contemporary art in the Czech Republic. The name derives from the Greek word doxa, meaning opinion or conviction.

DOX offers exhibitions of fine art, architecture and other disciplines, to which it adds lectures, discussions, concerts, film screenings and educational programmes. The complex includes the multifunctional hall DOX+, a café and bistro, a bookshop and a design shop. The Archive of Fine Arts holds the largest specialised collection of documents on contemporary Czech and Slovak art, and visitors can consult it.

The most striking part of the building is the airship Gulliver, a wooden structure in the shape of an airship standing above the roof of the centre. Designed by the architect Martin Rajniš, it was built in 2014 to 2016. It is used mainly for literary evenings, educational workshops and exhibition projects, and it links contemporary art with literature. Stairs lead inside, and the terrace beneath the airship is accessible without barriers.
