About the museum

Luděk Marold painted the panoramic painting Bitva u Lipan for the Jubilee Exhibition of Architecture and Engineering in 1898; work began on 7 February 1898 with the help of several other artists. The painting is 11 metres high, 95 metres wide and covers 1,045 m² of canvas; it was created in 127 working days. It depicts the battle that took place on 30 May 1434 between the Hussite armies and the Catholic Union of the nobility.

The panorama has stood on its present site since 1908, and in its current form since 1934. The first wooden building collapsed under snow in 1929, and Bohumír Číla then restored the painting. Further restorations took place in 1964, 1991 and 2002 to 2004. In front of the painting there is a sculptural foreground with real objects, which deepens the illusion of space.

A visit takes about 30 minutes, and in 2021 an information board was added explaining the events, weapons and figures. The Marold Panorama is the largest painting of a historical event ever created in Bohemia.
