About the museum
Důl Řimbaba stands in the hamlet of Vysoká Pec, which belongs to the municipality of Bohutín, and is one of the smallest shafts in the Bohutín ore district. Sinking began in 1843 under the original name Důl Božího požehnání (Mine of God’s Blessing), and galena lead ore was mined here. Operations lasted until 1900; the shaft reached a depth of 270 m, and almost 6,000 m of galleries were driven from it. Mining had already taken place on this site in the Middle Ages.
After 1900 the mine served as an auxiliary operation and ventilation shaft for the other shafts of the district, and from 1954 to 1969 also as a training mine for students of the Příbram Mining Industrial School. After mining ceased in the area, the shaft became an access point to a hereditary adit (dědičná štola).
Since 2006 the site has been managed by Spolek Řimbaba, a civic association of natives and friends of the Bohutín area, which is gradually building a regional museum devoted to mining and local history. Visitors can see exhibitions in the former engine house, a miner’s flat, nativity scenes and mining equipment, and climb the lookout on the winding tower. By prior arrangement, the Řimbabská štola (Řimbaba adit), whose origins probably date back to the 16th century, is also open to visitors.
