About the museum
A camp in the forests south-east of Příbram was built in 1947–1949 by German prisoners of war, and it was named after the nearby hill Vojna. From mid-1949 until 1951 it served as a forced labour camp for political opponents of the communist regime, who were sent without trial to work mainly in the uranium mines. It became the largest forced labour camp in the uranium mining area in Czechoslovakia.
In 1951 it was converted into a corrective labour camp, that is, a prison facility for people convicted of so-called state security offences, among whom were well-known scientists, artists, clergy and athletes. The number of prisoners ranged from hundreds to over a thousand, with the highest number in 1959. Vojna was abolished in June 1961, and the site was then used by the army until 2000.
In January 2001 the site was declared a cultural monument, and in 2005 it opened to the public. Today it is a branch of the Příbram Mining Museum. The tour routes lead through the site, with reconstructed buildings of the command post, the punishment block (korekce), the infirmary, the cultural house and the accommodation blocks, to the exhibition on persecution after February 1948, the exhibition Uran v českých dějinách (Uranium in Czech History) and the gallery of contemporary European art Orbis Pictus. There is also a concrete observation tower on the site.
