About the museum

A museum of the region was founded in Přeštice in 1933 as the District Agricultural Museum attached to the District Economic Savings Bank, a typical ethnographic collection, which however ceased to exist in the 1970s. Efforts to revive the local museum began to succeed at the end of the 1990s, when the town bought a suitable building with a plot of land in the historic core.

Dům historie Přešticka was built in 1999–2000 at a cost of about CZK 10 million; the Ministry of Culture contributed to the electronic security system. Until the end of 2008 it was run by the contributory organisation KZ Přeštice, and since 2009 it has been an organisational unit of the town. The professional installation of the permanent exhibition was designed by Jiří Koranda, the script was written by Drahomíra Valentová, and exhibits were also lent by the Západočeské muzeum (West Bohemian Museum) in Pilsen and the Muzeum jižního Plzeňska in Blovice.

The permanent exhibition on the ground floor is devoted to commercial monuments, mainly from the first half of the 20th century; the original merchant’s shop of Karel Fodermajer from Přeštice also serves as the cash desk and souvenir shop. The first floor presents crafts and trades typical of the region and is also used for demonstrations of traditional handicraft techniques. The museum holds exhibitions, lectures and tours of the town and of the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie).
