About the museum
The museum's activities in Blovice date back to 1913, when a museum section was set up within the beautification society on the initiative of František Raušar, director of the Blovice schools. The collections from Blovice and the surrounding area were kept in Raušar's flat, and after his death in 1941 all property passed to the town for the establishment of a museum. Originally the municipal Raušarovo vlastivědné muzeum, in the 1960s it extended its scope to the whole of southern Plzeň region; in 1976 it was renamed the Okresní muzeum Plzeň-jih, based in Blovice, and it has carried its current name since 2012.
A turning point came in 2000, when the museum was given use of the listed Hradiště Chateau with its castle park. For generations the chateau belonged to noble owners, including the Krakovský z Kolovrat family; after 1945 the property of the Klikar brothers was confiscated, and in 1953 the Ministry of Agriculture took over the chateau to establish a higher agricultural school.
The museum has long worked to make its exhibitions accessible to all visitors. Since a project for visually impaired visitors in 2014 it has offered tactile tours and labels in Braille; for deaf visitors there is a video guide in sign language. The exhibitions present a burgher and noble interior, folk culture, the museum's founder František Raušar and the native of the region Milan Knížák. Interactive educational programmes for children are also held.
