About the museum

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum was established in 1992–1993 as a private initiative after the fall of the Iron Curtain. The International Cultural Centre in Český Krumlov was founded by Serge Sabarsky, an American collector and expert on Expressionism, by Gerwald Sonnberger from Austria, and by Hana Lazarowitz Jirmusová, who runs the centre. It first opened to the public in November 1993 with an exhibition of Egon Schiele’s work.

It is housed in the complex of the former town brewery on Široká Street. The burghers of Krumlov obtained the right to brew beer as early as the 14th century, and the town had a new brewery built in 1606–1608. The brewery operated until 1949; afterwards the buildings were used by municipal enterprises, for example a canteen, municipal baths, workshops and a laundry. After these services were discontinued at the end of 1991, the Egon Schiele Foundation took over the complex and began its restoration.

The permanent exhibition recalls the life and work of Egon Schiele (1890–1918), whose mother came from Český Krumlov. Schiele stayed here in 1910 and 1911 and drew and painted a number of townscapes and landscape motifs. Alongside the exhibition, the centre organises exhibitions of both classical and contemporary art.
