About the museum

The museum is housed in the former Jesuit seminary on Horní Street, which was built in 1650–1652 on the site of six older burgher houses. The Jesuits had already been invited to the town in 1582 by Vilém z Rožmberka. After the order was dissolved in 1773 and the seminary in 1777, the building was used for school purposes, including as a German burgher school and a German municipal grammar school. The school in the building closed in 1945.

The decision to establish a new museum in Český Krumlov was made in June 1946, and the former seminary was assigned to the museum and the archive. The first public exhibition opened in 1952. From 1970 to 1980 the building underwent extensive reconstruction, after which the exhibition rooms were opened to the public. Earlier museum activities in the town date back to 1891, and a German municipal museum operated from 1916 to 1938.

The permanent exhibitions present the history of the town and region from prehistory to the end of the 20th century, a unique ceramic model of the historic centre at a scale of 1:200, made between 1977 and 1984, and a rarely preserved Baroque Jesuit pharmacy. The collections cover archaeology, the history of art and crafts, ethnography and the history of pharmacy. The museum is run by the South Bohemian Region and also includes the Muzeum Fotoateliér Seidel, the Památník Adalberta Stiftera in Horní Planá and a field station for experimental archaeology.
