About the museum
The Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists was founded in 1917 with the aim of supporting the development of Czech artistic graphics. It is one of the oldest and most important artists’ associations in the country and today brings together more than 180 graphic artists, theorists and printers. It prepares projects for Czech and foreign galleries and publishes publications on graphic art.
The gallery is located in the Hollar building on Smetanovo nábřeží, at the corner with Divadelní ulice. The neo-Renaissance house, a protected monument, was built in 1846 to a design by Josef Kaura. After 1990 the Faculty of Social Studies of Charles University became the main user of the building, and the gallery was returned to the administration of the Hollar association after 1989. In April 2013 a gas explosion in the vicinity damaged the house.
The gallery is both an exhibition and a sales space. It presents members of the association as well as guests, and holds cycles such as Mladá grafika (Young Graphics), in which students of art colleges have been presented since 2013, and talks such as Grafici živě (Graphic Artists Live) and Spisovatelé mezi obrazy (Writers Among Paintings). There is no permanent exhibition; the exhibitions alternate.
