About the museum

The museum is located in the grounds of the Vilém tin mine, which came into being during the First World War, when a shortage of raw materials led to mining being resumed also in the Slavkov Forest. After the war, mining declined again and the mine was closed in 1921. The modern history of the Krásno deposit began with a new large-scale opening in 1955, and in 1991 mining was ended.

In the following years the Muzeum Sokolov acquired the buildings of the site and established a mining museum there. The first part to be opened, in 1998, was the exhibition in the building of the former tin ore sorting plant, with a winding steam engine from 1897. The museum today presents the history of both ore and coal mining in the region, the history of the town of Krásno and its partner municipality Bischofsgrün.

In 2004 the neighbouring site was opened to visitors, with displays of locomotives and wagons of narrow gauges of 450, 600 and 900 mm, which were used underground in the Slavkov mining district and in surface brown coal mines. Visitors can see the demonstration adit, the exhibition of underground transport, an exhibition on mine rescue and an exhibition on villages that disappeared because of mining activity, and can walk along the educational trail. In season the mine train runs.
