About the museum
The museum in Horní Slavkov opened in 2001 as a branch of the Sokolov Museum, in the Gothic-Renaissance house no. 211 on Pluhova Street. Since 1 June 2012 it has been run by the Městské kulturní středisko Horní Slavkov (Horní Slavkov Municipal Cultural Centre). It adjoins Pluh’s House, no. 497.
The museum has eight exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibitions focus on mineralogy, mining, tin-working, porcelain production and the history of the town, including its decline after the Second World War. The mining of tin, silver and uranium is presented with ore samples. On the ground floor there is an exceptional burgher’s black kitchen. Three halls are used for short-term exhibitions.
The museum operates as a seasonal museum, and the collections on display are not the property of the operator. After the reconstruction of house no. 6, the town plans to convert the museum into a tourist and visitor centre.
