About the museum

The Hussite Museum was founded on 6 December 1878, when the Tábor municipal council approved the establishment of a town museum on the proposal of the Club of Friends of Science and Art. The collections were opened to the public six years later, and their basis was a collection of antiquities from the Tábor Realgymnasium. A large exhibition on Jan Hus in 1906 greatly increased the museum's standing.

The exhibition spaces were gradually expanded. First came the late Gothic Old Town Hall on Žižka Square, completed in 1521 by Wendel Roskopf and rebuilt in its present pseudo-Gothic form in 1878 by Josef Niklas; the last reconstruction was finished in 2020. Next came the Bechyně Gate, the most important monument of the town's medieval fortifications. In the early 1990s the directorate, specialist departments, storage and library moved into the reconstructed monastery of the Discalced Augustinians on Mikuláš z Husi Square.

The museum holds collections in geology, botany, zoology, archaeology, ethnography, history and art history, with an emphasis on documenting the Hussite movement and applied arts. Besides Tábor, it also manages the Památník Edvarda Beneše (Edvard Beneš Memorial) in Sezimovo Ústí and branches in Soběslav and Veselí nad Lužnicí. It is a contributory organisation of the Ministry of Culture.
