About the museum

The museum's beginnings go back to 1912, when residents of Františkovy Lázně began collecting the first objects for a future collection. From June 1913 the town took charge of the matter, and the museum, together with the town library, was given modest premises in the Aeskulap house. After the First World War the regional researcher Alois John turned the objects collected into a real exhibition.

The museum did not stop during the Second World War, but most of the collections were lost. Collecting resumed in 1957, and four years later the exhibition was reopened. In October 2008 the museum moved into a building on Dlouhá Street near the Labutí jezírko (Swan Pond), which was built in 1908 as a fire station.

The current permanent exhibition traces the history of the spa town from the discovery of the Františkův pramen (Franz Spring) to the 20th century, as well as local architecture and the development of balneological methods. It shows historical views of the spa, the wooden spring housing of the Franz Spring from the mid-18th century and the original statue of Franz by Adolf Mayerl from 1923. The museum also manages Seeberg Castle (hrad Seeberg) and the Soos national nature reserve.
