About the museum
Seeberg Castle lies about 5 km west of Františkovy Lázně. It is one of the few preserved ministerial castles in the Czech Republic and the only one of them that serves exclusively museum purposes. Its origin in the third quarter of the 12th century is linked to the territorial expansion of the Holy Roman Empire and to the activity of ministerials who, from the 12th century onward, built a network of fortified seats in the Cheb region.
For a long time the castle belonged to the town of Cheb, to which Charles IV granted in 1349 the right to administer it through its own official. In 1434 Emperor Sigismund gave it to the imperial chancellor Caspar Schlick; later it belonged to the Juncker patrician family and other families, and in 1703 it returned to the town of Cheb. The castle palace became a lodging house for poor weavers; at the beginning of the 20th century the castle was restored from 1907 under the direction of building councillor Josef Pascher, and in May 1915 an excursion restaurant opened there.
Because of its poor condition, the castle faced demolition; in the mid-1980s a group of enthusiasts and the director of the Municipal Museum of Františkovy Lázně, Pavel Stříbrný, saved it. The castle was reopened to the public in 1990. The exhibitions show the history of the castle, the development of interiors and 19th-century furniture, the famous Cheb inlaid furniture, the production of porcelain in western Bohemia, and the folk culture of the Cheb countryside in a half-timbered barn, a cart shed and a tower granary.
