About the museum
The museum arose from the initiative of Václav Lerchl the Elder, who in September 1887 called on the town's residents, through the local newspapers, to donate collection items. The original collection had about 250 items, and the first exhibition stood in the courtyard behind the Sanssouci house. During the Second World War the museum was closed, and in 1945 its damaged collections were moved to the Turba villa.
In 1953 it was decided to place the museum in house no. 11 on Goethe Square, formerly called Goethe-Haus. The classicist house was built in 1818 by Franz Habl and Sybilla Doeltschová as a boarding house for spa guests and named U zlatého hroznu (At the Golden Grape). From 2 July to 20 August 1823 J. W. Goethe lived in it, and his rooms have been preserved thanks to the care of the owners. The collections of the botanist and mineral collector Julie Hufnagel-Schildbachová were also added to the museum's holdings.
Between 1975 and 1979 the building was reconstructed and an extension was added, housing an exhibition on the development of the town and a screening hall. On the initiative of the museum, the Geological Park in the Mlýnské údolí (Mill Valley) was created in 1986–1989. The house is now the seat of exhibitions on spa history, mineral springs, Goethe, famous guests and King Edward VII, as well as the Goethe Gallery and a cinema hall. The museum is currently temporarily closed for the reconstruction of its exhibitions.
