About the museum
Mähring, in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth, lies only a few kilometres from the Czech border. For centuries trade and cross-border traffic with the neighbouring Bohemian villages shaped the town; after the Second World War, the expulsion of the German population from the area around Plan and Weseritz and the Iron Curtain brought this exchange to an abrupt end.
The Gelebtes Museum (Living Museum) opened in 2015 in the centrally located former school and town hall. Its permanent exhibition describes how political decisions changed life at the border: from flight and expulsion through the decades at the death strip to the first trial border-opening day in spring 1990, when tens of thousands of people came from both sides, and the friendships with the Czech Republic that have grown since. Lohhäuser stands as an example of the many vanished villages along the border; its residents had to leave and it was demolished afterwards, and finds from the village are on display in the museum.
Changing exhibitions, for example on the opening of the border or the end of the war in the border region, complement the offering. The museum is run by a volunteer museum director, belongs to the "das zwoelfer" museum network of the district of Tirschenreuth and received the Monument Prize of the Upper Palatinate district in 2018. Admission is free.
