About the museum
The Municipal Museum in Ústí nad Orlicí was founded in 1899 on the initiative of local patriots who wanted to preserve records of the life of the town. From the first gifts of postcards, photographs and textile samples grew a collection that now numbers more than 42 thousand objects, from archaeological finds to documents on 19th-century textile production.
The museum is housed in the Hernych villa, a representative building from 1906–1907 in the style of floral Art Nouveau. It was built for the textile entrepreneur Florian Hernych by the Karlín firm of Matěj Blecha, and the villa is the museum's largest exhibit: a wooden staircase, a metal chandelier in the hall and a candelabrum at the foot of the staircase have been preserved.
The permanent exhibitions present the furniture of the violinist Jaroslav Kocian, the exhibition Textile Ústí on the town's weaving tradition, including a workshop where visitors can try weaving, an Art Deco fireplace surround, and an interior orloj by František Planička. The museum also holds short-term exhibitions, educational programmes, guided tours and concerts in the representative hall.
