About the museum
The museum in Česká Třebová was founded in 1888 on the initiative of local teacher Jan Tykač, who also ran it until his death in 1921. It was established by the Museum Society to record the history of the town and its people. For decades the collections moved between the elementary school, the secondary school and the new and old town halls; from 1972 to 1986 they were kept in unsuitable storage, including a former printing works, where many objects were damaged beyond repair.
Since 1992 the former headquarters building of the barracks on Semanínská Street has served as the museum's depository. The museum was given the classicist house No. 11 on Klácelova Street as early as 1987, but a restitution dispute halted its conversion and was only settled by the courts in 2000. After renovation and the addition of a new building, funded in part by the EU programme ROP North-East, the exhibition building opened on 29 September 2012. Besides exhibition rooms it offers facilities for researchers and a quiet area in the courtyard.
The permanent exhibition "Dopravní křižovatky" (Transport Crossroads) playfully links four modes of transport connected with the town: the railway junction, the OS-KAR (later Velorex) three-wheeler built by the Stránský brothers, the flying machines of sculptor František Formánek and the never-built Danube–Oder–Elbe canal. The museum library also looks after an Esperanto library of around 5,500 titles, including prints from the late 19th century; it is kept in the depository and is open to researchers by prior arrangement. The museum also opens Max Švabinský's cottage in Kozlov, the Rotunda of St Catherine, the Chapel of Our Lady of Help in Hory and the Church of St James the Greater.
