About the museum

The Mucha Museum opened on 13 February 1998 in the Kaunický palace on Panská Street. It is considered the first museum in the world devoted exclusively to the life and work of Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939), a leading representative of Art Nouveau. It was founded by the Swiss entrepreneur Sebastian Pawlowski and is operated by the company Muchovo muzeum s.r.o., a member of the Association of Museums and Galleries of the Czech Republic. According to the museum itself, more than 2.6 million people have visited it in its twenty-seven years.

The exhibition occupies about 500 m², including the museum shop. Since September 2024 visitors have been able to see most of the key works from the famous collection of Mucha's works, which was previously assembled by the tennis player Ivan Lendl and whose curator was the American expert Jack Rennert. Today the collection is owned by Portu Gallery investments, a member of the WOOD & CO group.

The exhibition is divided into six parts. It presents decorative panels, posters from the Paris period, commercial commissions for well-known companies and Czech posters, as well as memorabilia of the artist; at the end a documentary film about his life and work is screened. The museum stresses that it is the only place in Prague that exhibits exclusively originals of Mucha's works.
