About the museum

Plans to establish a municipal museum in Hranice had been discussed since the end of the 19th century, and systematic collecting began in 1904. The museum opened on 5 July 1905 in one room of the school building on School Square, and its first custodian was Josef Šindel. The collections soon outgrew the space: in 1912 they moved to the town hall and in 1921 back to School Square. After 1927 purchases of paintings and an agricultural department were added, and in 1934–1935 legionnaires set up a First World War collection at the town hall.

After the museum closed in 1939, part of the collections was exhibited in 1943 in the restored former synagogue; in the 1950s they were scattered among various storerooms, and in the 1960s they were transferred to Přerov. The organisation became an independent municipal museum and gallery on 1 January 1994, and in the same year more than 21,000 objects returned from Přerov. Since 2001 the museum has been housed in the Old Town Hall, which also contains exhibition halls including the Gothic Hall. Since 1 January 2015 the museum has been part of the contributory organisation Municipal Cultural Institutions Hranice.

The collections today contain about 40,000 objects. The permanent exhibitions include a chest exhibition and two exhibitions in the town hall tower on the geology and minerals of Hranice, as well as the exhibition Hranice in the Crosshairs and a model of the historic town centre in the Museum at the Castle.
