About the museum

The Almárium Museum is installed in a beautiful parish building in the centre of Sobotka and offers visitors the most interesting objects from the local museum's collections. The rooms in which the museum is housed have witnessed Sobotka's history. Karel Čapek described Sobotka in his book Obrázky z domova as a town of poets, teachers and shoemakers, and this is exactly what visitors learn in the exhibition.

The guide replaces a printed text: visitors can look at the historical tools of shoemakers, see what a shoemaker's shop looked like during the First Republic, and try sitting at a school desk from the first half of the 20th century. The name Almárium refers to the many types of painted cupboards and chests that form a significant part of the collection.

Part of the exhibition is a set of puppets that belongs to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. The museum is run by the town of Sobotka together with Humprecht Castle; in 2026, marking 160 years since the Austro-Prussian War, it prepared an exhibition on the 1866 war in the Sobotka area.
