About the museum
Museum activity in Jičín dates back to the second half of the 19th century, when economic societies collected objects. The permanent exhibition was first opened in 1896 in the building of the municipal savings bank and, apart from the years of occupation, operated until 1948. A new exhibition on the first floor of the Jičín château was solemnly opened on 12 June 1949.
From 1969 to 1989 the exhibition was closed because of the reconstruction of the château. A separate gallery was established in 1965 as the Galerie výtvarných umění Jičín (Gallery of Fine Arts Jičín); from 1975 it had a large exhibition hall in the reconstructed château stables, and from January 1987 it was again joined with the museum as the Okresní muzeum a galerie Jičín (District Museum and Gallery Jičín). Today's Regional Museum and Gallery is a regional contributory organisation and also presents itself as the Muzeum hry (Museum of Play).
The permanent exhibition on the history and nature of the Jičín region offered several routes through the tour, including one with a family guide, game elements and the theme of Albrecht of Valdštejn (Wallenstein). Since 15 October 2023 the permanent exhibition has been closed for a complete reconstruction, and the opening of the new exhibition is planned for 2026. The museum also includes the Šolcův statek branch in Sobotka.
