About the museum
The museum grew out of an initiative of the association Četnická stanice Chlumec nad Cidlinou, which was founded in 2010. The association wanted to research the history of the gendarmerie station and pass on the results to the public. The museum opened on 16 June 2018.
Because the museum could not be housed in the original town building, it is located on the first floor of a historic house, the former forestry office. The association rents the premises, and the town of Chlumec nad Cidlinou also supports its operation. The exhibition charts the station’s existence from 1866 until the creation of the Corps of National Security (Sbor národní bezpečnosti) in 1945.
It consists of two parts. Classic display cases hold uniforms and other period objects; the second part houses a furnished gendarmerie office and living quarters from the late 1930s, where visitors can try out some of the exhibits. The museum also includes a small library of period publications. The association’s specialist focus ranges from the gendarmerie in 1918–1945 to the armed corps of the First Republic.
