About the museum

The town museum is housed in the former village school building in the centre of Týnec nad Labem. The same building also contains the Karel Hampl Library, founded in 1915, and the tourist information centre. The town received a grant for a general renovation of the museum. The works included electrical wiring, heating, ceilings, walls and floors. New display cases were then made, and the exhibition returned to the restored rooms; the museum opened at the start of the 2013/2014 school year.

The basic exhibition traces the history of the town and its immediate surroundings from prehistoric settlement to the present. It shows, for example, finds from the Kolo hill, remains of the 16th-century Pernštejn bridge, town seals, guild objects and a facsimile of Cosmas's Chronicle, with the earliest mention of Týnec from 1110. Separate sections commemorate the activities of the Perner and Harrer families.

The museum also documents mother-of-pearl working, quarries, millers and brewers, and the development of amateur theatre, cinema, sport, firefighting and other clubs. It recalls well-known natives and personalities who taught at the school or had a connection with the town, and it also presents General Melas.
