About the museum
House No. 3 in Křečovice was built in 1895 by the father of the composer Josef Suk, a long-serving local teacher, school head and organist. Josef Suk, then a member of the Czech Quartet, came here to rest after demanding concert tours, and he also composed in the calm rural surroundings. Many prominent musicians came to visit him at the little house, among them Antonín Dvořák and Václav Talich.
After the composer’s death in 1935, the house was taken over by his son, the engineer Josef Suk, who set up a museum in it and bequeathed it to the state in 1951. Today the memorial is administered by the České muzeum hudby (Czech Museum of Music) as part of the National Museum. The building underwent reconstruction in 2008.
The exhibition has remained in its original interior arrangement. Visitors can see period furniture, paintings, personal belongings and the composer’s Bösendorfer piano. Documents trace the successive phases of Suk’s development as a composer and his activity in the Czech Quartet.
