About the museum
The museum is housed in a monumental four-storey Baroque granary from 1770, which belonged to the farm estate of the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. The Order acquired the Starý Knín estate, to which Prostřední Lhota also belonged, in 1669. Today the building, which is protected as a historic monument, has a rectangular plan with rounded corners and volute gables on the shorter sides.
The municipality of Chotilsko pushed for using the spacious interior for exhibitions and cultural purposes. The exhibition From the Life of the Rural Population of the Middle Vltava opened in 2004. It mainly shows agricultural machinery and tools, equipment for craft and domestic production, and the interior of a folk dwelling from the second half of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century. It follows on from the collection of farm machinery at the open-air museum in Vysoký Chlumec and the crafts exhibition at the Gold Museum in Nový Knín, which are also branches of the Příbram Mining Museum.
Other parts of the granary house an archaeological exhibition on the earliest settlement of the district, on gold mining and on research into the Celtic oppidum of Hrazany; an exhibition on the activities of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star in central Bohemia; and a display on the tradition of motorcycle road racing, with historic machines from local natives. A photo documentation of the old Vltava, including an installation of a village inn, is also worth seeing. Seasonal exhibitions complement the displays.
