About the museum

The Karlovy Vary museum was founded at the initiative of the prominent physician and balneologist Josef Löschner as a municipal institution, together with an archive and a regional library. The oldest collections were sets of spa cups and rocks from the Karlovy Vary area, especially various forms of vřídlovec (sprudel stone). Already in 1867 the glass engraver Anton Pittroff set up a private museum, whose collection was later incorporated into the municipal museum at his wish.

In 1937 the museum acquired the private collection of the spa physician Karel Becher, which includes a unique set of literature about Karlovy Vary. The collections also include targets and shooting trophies of the Karlovy Vary shooting society and an ethnographic collection of the collector Paul Weber von Hohengrund. The ethnographer Josef Hofmann also donated many items.

Today the museum is a contributory organisation of the Karlovy Vary Region. The permanent exhibition presents living and non-living nature, archaeological finds, the development of settlement and mining, medieval and Baroque sculptures, the history of the spa town since the 15th century, famous physicians and visitors, local crafts and art-historical collections. The museum also includes the Royal Mint in Jáchymov.
