About the museum

Since 5 June 2004 the museum has been housed in the former parsonage of Liteň, which—together with its enclosure wall—is listed as a cultural monument. The new parsonage was built in 1889–1890 with support from the estate owner Josef Šebestián Daubek, and after the death of the last parish priest in 1995 it stood unused until 2004. The museum is run by the market town of Liteň.

The museum builds on an older exhibition, housed in the Čechovna building from 1964 to 2001, which was devoted only to Svatopluk Čech. The poet spent part of his childhood in Liteň from 1852 to 1856, because his father was the administrator of the Liteň estate; his collection Ve stínu lípy (In the Shade of the Linden) is inspired by Liteň and its people. The museum stands just a few metres from the site of the vanished Čech Linden.

The exhibition has three sections. The first is devoted to the life and work of the world-famous singer Jarmila Novotná, wife of Jiří Daubek. The second recalls the history of Liteň, the Liteň estate, the château and its owners, including the first distilling school in Bohemia, founded in 1883. The third presents other personalities associated with Liteň, among them the education reformer and parish priest František Josef Řezáč, the priest Václav Beneš Třebízský and the palaeontologist Otomar Pravoslav Novák. The displays include photographs, copies of documents and objects from the estate of Liteň personalities and the château.
