About the museum
The origins of the National Agricultural Museum go back to 1891, when after the Jubilee Exhibition a large collection of objects remained with the association. The Agricultural Museum was established as an independent institution in 1918. The main building today stands on Letná and is an important monument of Czech functionalist architecture: it was built in 1937–1939 to a design by the architect Milan Babuška, together with the neighbouring building of the National Technical Museum.
Shortly after completion, the building was occupied by the German army, and after February 1948 it was used, on the decision of the Communist Party, by the state construction enterprises Stavební podniky, n. p. The museum regained it only in 1994. In 2014 an extensive reconstruction began, which returned the building to its 1939 appearance.
The museum today offers several permanent exhibitions, for example Agriculture, Fishing, Hunting, Gastronomy or Tractors, as well as a courtyard and garden with the Malý selský dvorek (Little Farmstead). It holds regular events, educational programmes for schools and families, and cooking courses in a professional gastro studio. The building has two cafés and a museum shop, and the roof terrace offers a view of Prague.
