About the museum

The convent was founded in the early 1230s by Princess Anežka Přemyslovna (c. 1211–1282), later its abbess, who was canonised in 1989. It was the first joint double monastery of Poor Clares and Minorites north of the Alps and also a burial site of the Přemyslids; royal coronations and funerals took place here, and St Agnes is buried here.

During the Hussite Wars the nuns had to leave; under Rudolf II the monastery was taken over by the Dominicans, and the Minorites died out. Joseph II dissolved the monastery in 1782, and it was later sold at auction. At the end of the 19th century it was threatened with demolition but was saved. In the 1970s it was declared a national cultural monument, and after a long reconstruction it opened to the public in the 1980s.

Today the monastery is managed by the National Gallery Prague. The permanent exhibition Medieval Art in Bohemia and Central Europe 1200–1550 is supplemented by a lapidarium with architectural fragments, panel paintings and tombstones in the Black Kitchen, the refectory of the Poor Clares and the ambulatory of the Minorites. Both monastery gardens are freely accessible all year round and offer a sculpture garden with almost twenty works by contemporary Czech sculptors.
