About the museum
The Ethnographic Museum is housed in the former summer residence of the Kinsky family, which stands on Petřín in Prague. The City of Prague bought the estate in 1901, and the museum opened to the public in 1903. In 1922 it became part of the National Museum. In 1929 the Greek Catholic Church of St Michael from Subcarpathian Ruthenia was moved into the garden.
The building was reconstructed in the 1990s, and in 2005 a new exhibition, Musaion, opened in it. The museum’s collection comprises around 200,000 objects documenting folk culture and the everyday and festive life of the countryside.
The permanent exhibition Czech Folk Culture presents the everyday and festive life of the rural population in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia from the 18th century to the early 20th century. The museum also runs creative workshops for families, courses, concerts and themed evenings.
