About the museum

Jaroslav Hašek came to Lipnice nad Sázavou in 1921 with his friend, the painter Jaroslav Panuška. At the foot of the castle he bought a small house, in which he spent his last years and wrote a substantial part of Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka during the war. He died there on 3 January 1923 and is buried in the old Lipnice cemetery near the square.

A memorial exhibition was set up in the house; it is run by the town of Lipnice nad Sázavou and is on loan from the collections of the Muzeum Vysočiny Havlíčkův Brod. From October 2024 until the summer season of 2025 the memorial was closed for revitalisation co-financed by the European Union. The reconstruction restored, among other things, the historic wall paintings, based on surviving photographs from Hašek's time.

The exhibition documents the writer's life and his international significance. It contains personal memorabilia that have survived in the house, such as a watch, furniture and tableware, as well as manuscripts, various editions of Hašek's works including foreign-language ones, and documents on the reception of Švejk around the world. A bed in which the writer died and his kitchen can also be seen. The house also houses a tourist information centre and sells books and souvenirs.
