About the museum
The Teplice museum is housed in the grounds of a former women's Benedictine monastery, founded around 1164 at the initiative of Queen Judith. The monastery later fell into decline; after the Hussite wars the nuns left it, and a manor house was built on its site, which was gradually rebuilt into a château. From 1634 to 1945 the château belonged to the Clary-Aldringen family, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries it received its present Classicist form. Of the original monastery the south wing has survived, with a Romanesque exhibition, a Romanesque crypt and part of the monastery basilica.
The founding meeting of the Teplice Museum Society was held in the château in 1894. The regional museum has been based here since 1947 and cares for collections of archaeology, history and natural history of north-western Bohemia. The mineralogical collection derives from a private collection acquired in 1897, the exhibition of historical clocks has been presented to the public since 1996, and the numismatic cabinet draws on a holding of about 11,000 objects.
Today visitors walk through the traces of the vanished monastery, an exhibition of Art Nouveau glass, spa history, zoology, palaeontology or mineralogy. The château grounds are complemented by the château garden and an artificial grotto from around 1630. Since 28 November 2023 the ceramics and porcelain exhibition and the château interiors have been closed until further notice.
