About the museum
The museum building, an Empire-style house at No. 181 on Muzejní náměstí, was built in 1816, though not yet as a museum. The idea of a museum was born in 1917, when students founded the Muzejní spolek pro Železnici a okolí (Museum Society for Železnice and Surroundings). They collected hundreds of objects, books and documents, which were kept in the town hall, and part of the collection was first exhibited in 1920.
In 1940 the society acquired house No. 181 from the bequest of František Mencl, and a year later the neighbouring log cottage from 1789. After 1955 the society ceased its activity; it was revived in 1990, and in December 2016 its activity ended. The largest hall bears the name of the painter Tavík František Šimon, a native of Železnice, and is used for artists' exhibitions.
Today the museum presents exhibitions on archaeology, the war of 1866, palaeontology and mineralogy, a school classroom from the late 19th century, a merchant's shop and the log cottage. Several exhibitions devoted to guilds and local painters are temporarily closed for reconstruction.
