About the museum
The oldest record of Krásný Dvůr dates from 1295. In the first half of the 16th century Václav Pětipeský of Krásný Dvůr began building a fortified house on the site of today's castle, but did not finish it, and in 1547 he was executed for taking part in the estates' revolt. The Renaissance villa that completed the building was finished by Jan the Younger Mašťovský of Kolovrat, and its layout still forms the core of the main building.
The Černín family acquired the estate in 1649 and held it until 1945. In 1720–1724 František Josef Černín had the old villa rebuilt as a representative Baroque castle to plans by František Maxmilián Kaňka. At the end of the 18th century Jan Rudolf Černín had the interiors refurnished and in 1783 laid out a vast natural landscape park around the castle, the first of its kind in Bohemia, with many Romantic structures such as the Neo-Gothic Temple, Pan's Temple, the Chinese Pavilion and the Obelisk.
During the Second World War the castle was used by the Nazi authorities and as a military hospital; after the war it housed a store of furniture from a number of abolished castles. It was opened to the public already in the 1950s. In 2001 the castle and park were declared a national cultural monument. Today a circuit of eleven rooms furnished in the spirit of the 18th and 19th centuries can be visited, and the castle is gradually undergoing repairs to its roofs and staircases. The park, almost one hundred hectares in size, is freely accessible all year round.
