About the museum

The Renaissance building on Masarykova Street in Žatec was built in 1573–1574, according to a survey. Originally it served as the town granary, then as the municipal malt house. In 1801 it became a residential house, and later the couple Ferdinand and Marie Jacob produced paints and varnishes there, as shown by the inscriptions on the façade that were discovered and restored. After the building was taken over by the state, it began to decay.

It was saved by its inclusion in the project Chrám chmele a piva (Temple of Hops and Beer). The building was fully restored in 2010 and became part of the complex of hop-growing technical monuments. Today the ground floor houses an information office, where tickets for tours and souvenirs are sold, and the permanent exhibition Sladovnictví (Malting), with archaeological finds.

On the first floor is the interactive exhibition Historie NeObyčejné tužky (The History of the Unusual Pencil), which presents a lifelong collection of historic and rare pencils belonging to the collector Emanuel Petrán, and where visitors can make their own pencil; the partner is the brand KOH-I-NOOR. Another part of the floor is devoted to the exhibition Žatec ve filmu (Žatec in Film), with short excerpts from films shot in the town, and an exhibition gallery where artists' shows change several times a year.
