About the museum

The château in Vranov nad Dyjí was created by rebuilding an original royal castle, first mentioned around 1100. It stands on a rocky spur above the Dyje river in the western part of the Podyjí National Park, about 110 kilometres from Vienna. It is a national cultural monument.

In Baroque form it was rebuilt from the end of the 17th century by the Althann family, who owned the estate for about a hundred years; the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach also took part in the rebuilding. The Hall of Ancestors and the château chapel also date from this period. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the château belonged to the Polish counts Mniszek and Stadnicki, who developed the local ceramics and porcelain manufactory.

Today the château is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can take the route through the representative halls, the private chambers, a separate route through the grounds with the tower, a special technical tour from the cellars to the attic, and a fairy-tale costumed tour for children.
