About the museum
Cornštejn Castle stands on a rocky spur around which the river Dyje flows on three sides. It was founded in the early 14th century by Raimund of Lichtenburk to strengthen the defence of the nearby Bítov castle. The ruins survive today and are managed by the Jihomoravské muzeum (South Moravian Museum) in Znojmo.
Archaeological research has revealed, among other things, late Gothic stove tiles, for example one depicting the Archangel Michael slaying the dragon. The museum is gradually opening the castle to the public: in 2022 it opened the underground spaces of the old palace, the castle cistern and a viewing platform on the roof of the new palace. After construction work that began in March 2023, the courtyard was made accessible again in mid-September 2023, and part of the wall on the south-western side was also restored.
Part of the tour is a themed installation in the cellar showing how medieval cellars were used: you will find a larder, a guardroom for the castle guards and a room where torture was practised.
