Besættelsesmuseum Fyn
Association-run museum on the occupation period of 1940–45 on Funen, located at the Rosendal farm and in a German command bunker at Odense Airport in Beldringe.
About the museum
When the fortunes of war turned in 1943, the Wehrmacht ordered the construction of four airfields in Denmark to counter a feared Allied landing. One of them was built at Beldringe on Funen. Almost 3,000 tønder land were requisitioned for it; residents of Allesø, Beldringe, Tåstrup and parts of neighboring villages had to leave their farms by March 1944. Around 5,000 Danish workers built a two-kilometer runway, taxiways, aircraft shelters, fuel depots and bunkers, including two command bunkers.
The airfield was not operational until March 1945. Soon afterward, German refugees arrived in the area; at times around 1,700 of them lived there alongside German soldiers and the British troops who took over the airfield after liberation. From 1946, the Rosendal farm served as a hospital for the refugees; the last camps in Allesø and Beldringe closed in February 1947.
Besættelsesmuseum Fyn opened in 2013 and is based at the Rosendal farm next to what is now Hans Christian Andersen Airport. The permanent exhibition covers the resistance, the German presence and everyday life for Danes in the years 1940–45, with weapons, supply-drop containers and the recreated apartment of a resistance fighter. In one of the two command bunkers from 1944, the museum presents an exhibition about Beldringe Airfield. The museum is run by an association with volunteer helpers; it also includes a Cold War bunker in Kerteminde.
