Carl Nielsen Museet
Museum dedicated to the composer Carl Nielsen at the Odense Koncerthus, where sound, light, and music tell the story of his life.
About the museum
The museum for Carl Nielsen (1865–1931), Denmark's best-known composer, was established in Odense in 1989. It is located in a corner of the Odense Koncerthus opposite the Odeon and is closely tied to the concert hall, the Odense Symfoniorkester, and the Carl Nielsen district. The core of the collection was a bequest from the children of Carl Nielsen and his wife, the sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, including the furnishings of their last apartment on Frederiksholms Kanal in København.
In 2023 the exhibition was completely redesigned, funded by the Carl Nielsen og Anne Marie Carl-Nielsens Legat. Content and design were developed in collaboration with a research project at the University of København. The music itself is the main exhibit: visitors lift, turn, and press objects to hear excerpts from symphonies, concertos, and songs, and learn which places, people, and sounds inspired Nielsen. Personal items such as his violins and his bugle are also on display.
The museum belongs to Museum Odense, which also runs Nielsen's childhood home in Nørre Lyndelse and will open the research center Carl Nielsen Centret in 2026. An exhibition about Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen can be seen at the nearby TID – Museum for Odense.
