H.C. Andersens Barndomshjem
Small yellow half-timbered house in Odense where Hans Christian Andersen grew up from 1807 to 1819, with a garden full of plants from his fairy tales.
About the museum
The Andersen family lived in this modest half-timbered house on Munkemøllestræde from 1807 to 1819. The future poet moved in here with his parents at the age of two and left Odense at 14 to seek his fortune in Copenhagen. At that time the house was divided into three small apartments totaling about 42 square meters; besides the Andersens, the family of a journeyman glove maker and a hatter, among others, lived here.
After the building was restored to its original form, it passed into the ownership of the City of Odense in 1931 and opened as a museum. For the poet's 200th birthday in 2005, the exhibition was revised and expanded.
On display are the cramped rooms in which Andersen developed his imagination despite great poverty; one room is furnished according to the descriptions in his memoirs. Since 2016 the house has included a garden designed by the landscape architect Charlotte Skibsted, where historic and present-day plants from Andersen's fairy tales grow. The house is operated by Museum Odense, which also includes H.C. Andersens Hus.
