About the museum

The idea arose in 1971 during a trip by the Veteranfly Klubben to England, where the members experienced a "flying museum" at the Shuttleworth Collection. On April 19, 1975, the Dansk Veteranflysamling was founded as a foundation at Stauning Airport. In 1977, the first exhibition hall was built with modest means, in 1981 a workshop and offices followed, and then the collection opened to visitors.

The goal soon became a complete collection of the aircraft of Skandinavisk Aero Industri, which Viggo Kramme and Karl Gustav Zeuthen built from 1937. With support from the region and the surrounding municipalities, the KZ hall was added in 1990/91; today the museum owns all eleven KZ types, many of them airworthy. In 2006, a hall opened for the Air Force collection, which ranges from the first Danish military aircraft of 1911 to the F-16. Since 2007, the museum has been called Danmarks Flymuseum.

On around 7,600 m², the museum shows about 60 aircraft – gliders, vintage planes, fighter jets, and helicopters – as well as engines, propellers, uniforms, and over 1,000 models. One focus is the aviation pioneer Jacob Christian Ellehammer, who in 1906 was the first in Europe to take off in a powered aircraft. The museum is still run mainly by volunteers, who have restored 16 aircraft to airworthy condition and demonstrate them at flying evenings and air shows.
