Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2027). The former museum at Jernbanegade 10 has been permanently closed since July 2026. Museum Fredericia will open a new exhibition in new premises at Prinsessegade 82 at J.B. Nielsens Plads in spring 2027.

About the museum

The museum movement in Fredericia began in 1916, when a newspaper article in the Fredericia Avis lamented the lack of a museum in the city of monuments. In the same year, on October 20, 1916, the Fredericia Museumsforening was founded. Initially without premises of its own, the association showed exhibitions at changing locations and raised money with concerts and other events. In 1924 it acquired its first building, a former tobacco warehouse; over the following decades further historic buildings from the city area were added and moved to the museum grounds on Jernbanegade.

The main building on Jernbanegade showed the history of Fredericia from 1650 to today with a focus on fortress and military, religious freedom, trade, crafts, and industry; in the courtyard there was a rococo-style garden. In 1973 the Local History Archive was established, which cooperated with the museums from 2001; in 2010 both appeared together as Museerne i Fredericia. Since 2023/24 Museum Fredericia has been an independent, state-recognized institution.

In July 2026 the museum permanently closed its exhibitions on Jernbanegade because the buildings, with strongly fluctuating humidity, no longer met the requirements of modern museum operations; the collection was moved to a storage facility in Vejle. In spring 2027 a new, compact exhibition is to open in rented premises at Prinsessegade 82 at J.B. Nielsens Plads, near the historic city center. It is meant to convey the central stories about the fortress and the free city of Fredericia and to serve as a trial run for a later, larger museum.
