About the museum

The impetus came from citizens of the town who donated artworks in the 1890s in order to create a publicly accessible museum. From 1901 the collection could at first be seen only on Sundays for two hours.

The first permanent museum building, a brick building from 1924, was donated by Agnes Benteline Hviid – on the condition that it could be converted into apartments for single women should the museum fail. In 1933 a functionalist extension followed, which served as both library and museum. In 2007 an extension by Kim Utzon Arkitekter was added, with a large hall for special exhibitions, storage and a workshop.

The museum is known for its extensive graphic art collection with works on paper from about 500 years, including 17th-century Dutch prints with numerous etchings by Rembrandt. It also owns paintings of the Danish Golden Age, works of the Cobra movement around Asger Jorn, and contemporary art. Today the museum belongs to the Vejlemuseerne, the museum organization of the Vejle municipality, and is open Tuesday to Sunday with free admission.
