Gedhusmuseet

Opening hoursAdmission DKK 50

About the museum

Karup Air Base goes back to Fliegerhorst Grove, which the German Wehrmacht built in central Jutland during the Second World War. Since 1950, when the Danish air force, the Flyvevåben, was founded, the site has been an air force base. To preserve this history, Flyvestation Karups Historiske Forening was founded on 13 February 1979. On 10 December 1981 the association set up the Gedhusmuseet in building 421 at the Gedhusvagten, an entrance to the air base.

The exhibition traces the development of the airfield from its construction to the present day. Photos document the construction period, alongside equipment from the early years of the Danish armed forces and the Flyvevåben, aircraft engines, ejection seats, aircraft cannons, weapons and a GCA control panel from radar approach control. Smaller objects are displayed in the main building; aircraft and other large objects stand in a hall and a tent. There is also an outdoor area with retired military aircraft of the Danish air force, including a Saab 35 Draken and an F-100 Super Sabre. A bunker of the German type Regelbau 622 is also among the stops that the museum presents in its picture gallery.

The museum is run on a volunteer basis by a team of six, including five guides who show visitors and groups through the collection. It is open only on Wednesdays from April to October; groups of 15 or more can also come outside these times, depending on the guides available.
