E Bindstouw
School and knitting-room house from around 1790 in Lysgård near Viborg, known from Blicher's "E Bindstouw" – perhaps the smallest open-air museum in the world.
About the museum
Around 1790, the lord of Hald Hovedgård had a small schoolhouse built in the village of Lysgård, where teaching took place until 1830. In the winter half-year the room doubled as a Bindestue (knitting room): once the children had recited their hymns and worked their slates, the adults of the village gathered in the evening by the light of tallow candles, knitted stockings, told stories and sang.
The poet Steen Steensen Blicher made this world known in 1842 with his collection of novellas "E Bindstouw", a series of stories and songs in various Jutlandic dialects set in the knitting room.
In 1879 a bricklayer bought the house, took it down and re-erected it elsewhere in the village. When Viborg's tourist association bought the building in 1936 and wanted to move it to a planned open-air museum near Viborg, the residents of Lysgård resisted with a petition and won over politicians and the Nationalmuseet to their cause. In October 1952 the reconstructed house was inaugurated on its original plot east of the village church.
Since then it has served as a museum and is furnished as in Blicher's time, with a school room, knitting room and the schoolmaster's apartment. Since 1987 it has been a branch of Viborg Museum and is looked after by volunteers.
