About the museum

In March 1906, citizens of the town founded the Museum Association of Horsens, from which the Horsens Museum emerged. The aim was to awaken and maintain interest in art and historical evidence. The first exhibitions took place in rented rooms of the technical school.

A bequest from the pilot captain Theodor Løwenstein made it possible to build a dedicated museum building on Sundvej, designed by the architect Viggo Norn and inaugurated in October 1915. Norn then chaired the board for almost five decades. Until 1984 the house showed art and cultural history together; then the art department moved into the park Caroline Amalie Lund as the independent Horsens Kunstmuseum.

Today the museum belongs to Museum Horsens, which is run by the municipality and also includes the Fængselsmuseet, the art museum, and the city archive. The collection comprises over 25,000 objects and numerous archaeological finds. Archaeologists from the museum searched, among other places, on Bering Island off the Russian east coast for the final resting place of the explorer Vitus Bering, born in Horsens. The exhibitions are currently being renewed step by step.
