Hygum Hjemstavnsgård
Living agricultural museum run by volunteers on a listed four-winged farmstead in Sønder Hygum near Rødding.
About the museum
The Hjemstavnsgård came into being on January 1, 1987, when Peter Conradsen acquired the farm at Ollingvej 1 in Sønder Hygum. The four-winged farmstead dates from the mid-1860s; the farmhouse, stables, barn and carriage shed have thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. The farm and its surroundings have been protected as a historic monument since 2006, and the living room was restored by 2012 to its condition around 1910.
Further buildings were added little by little: in 1996 a former sawmill, which now houses the office, cafeteria and exhibitions; in 1998–99 an activity house built using old craft techniques; and in 2001–02 a stable building with a tractor exhibition. A village forge from 1834 was dismantled and rebuilt on the grounds in 2006–07, together with a bake oven.
The museum is an independent institution that is carried entirely by around 150 volunteers. It shows agriculture, village crafts and household life from about 1860 to 1960: old kitchen, spinning house, forge, carpentry workshop, dolls and toys, horse-drawn wagons and flax-processing equipment. On activity days, work is done with horses and vintage tractors.
