Kommandørgården
Magnificent 18th-century captain's farmstead on Rømø with tiled parlors, a sperm whale skeleton, and the small Toftum Skole.
About the museum
The farmstead in Toftum on the Wadden Sea island of Rømø was built around 1748, after the wealthy Frisian captain Harcke Thades from Föhr married into a long-established Rømø family in 1746. A 16th-century farm had previously stood on the site. The new house on a rise has Frisian features, and its furnishings of Dutch tiles, painted walls and ceilings, and a grandfather clock reflect the wealth that seafaring, whaling, and trade via Amsterdam brought to the island at the time.
For about 200 years, the farm remained in the possession of the same family. In the 19th century, the fortune dwindled, agriculture gained importance, and the farm buildings were extended. As early as around 1930, the house was known for its well-preserved interior and was shown to tourists by the owners.
In 1950, the Nationalmuseet took over the badly dilapidated farm, carefully restored it, and opened it as a museum in 1951; in the process it was largely returned to its state around 1770. A further comprehensive renovation followed in 1998 with funds from the A.P. Møller Foundation. In the barn hangs the skeleton of a young sperm whale from a group of 16 animals that stranded on Rømø in 1996. The museum also includes the Toftum Skole of 1784, 150 meters away, which is considered perhaps the smallest school in Denmark.
